It was a good trip, actually, and I had an absolute blast. Shame about the war breaking out right in the middle of it, but what can you do.
I suppose the highlight of the trip was on Friday, when apis_mellifera, bafleyanne, the Tiny Child, and myself went to Philadelphia. We spent a lot of time in the South Street neighborhood, which is very nice and funky and Ann-Arbor-y and I would love to go back. We also saw Lost Highways, an exhibit about the "future we were promised." I'm a sucker for past visions of the future and pop-culture ephemera of that sort.
After that, we decided to swing by the U.S. Mint, just to say that we'd been there. Well, the joke was on us, because the massive concrete barriers and squad of security personnel informed us that all tours of the Mint were suspended until further notice, due to heightened security blah blah blah patriotcakes. So we turned about and walked down toward Independence Hall; we wanted to see the Liberty Bell, but since the whole area was under barriers and park rangers, not to mention the crowd of tourists getting funneled through the multiple security checkpoints, we decided to give it a miss.
For me, this is the metaphor--freedom is so precious that it must be kept under lock and key and constant armed guard, not left out in the open where god knows who can get access to it...
Anyway, it was a good day. Yesterday was mostly spent travelling, with CNN blaring constantly all over the airports. But that's a subject for another time.
And now, to unpack and get everything organized for tomorrow.
