My High School Days:
What years were they?
September 1988 to June 1992.
What were your three favorite bands?
When I started high school, "Weird Al" Yankovic. Around 1990 or so, Depeche Mode. After 1991, They Might Be Giants. You have to remember, I'm still a relative latecomer to the music fandom scene-- I didn't even go to my first concert until I was in college.
What was your favorite outfit?
I didn't care much about fashion in high school. I usually wore sweaters, khakis, polo shirts, and the like. I was being groomed for young prep-hood, you might say.
What was up with your hair?
Parted on the left, often laquered with hair-styling products. A style that would stay the same for me until the fall of 1995, actually.
Who were your friends?
Roy and Brad were the ones I was closest to.
What did you do after school?
Went home and played computer games. SimCity (the old-school one) and Their Finest Hour were my favorites.
Where did you work?
Sir Pizza, in Rochester Hills, MI. I was a prep cook. It was nice to have money, but man that job sucked.
Did you take the bus?
I took the bus home from school. In the mornings, Brad gave me a lift because we both lived in the same subdivision.
What did you drive?
I didn't have my own car, I just borrowed my mom's ('89 Pontiac Grand Am, in case you wonder).
Who did you have a crush on?
Oh lord... I was too shy and awkward in high school to even admit that I liked people, so I can't remember too many of them. I remember that I crushed on Christine, who had the locker next to mine my senior year, and Trish, who sat behind me in English class I can't remember when. Oh, and lilyblack, of course.
Did you fight with your parents?
Some, but not too much.
Who did you have a CELEBRITY crush on?
I don't know if you could call them "crushes", but I thought Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne from Twin Peaks) was pretty damned hot. And I felt somewhat the same way over Sara Gilbert as well.
Did you smoke cigarettes?
No, I wasn't cool enough.
Did you lug all of your books around in your backpack all day because you were too nervous to find your locker?
In 9th and 10th grades, yes, unfortunately. Actually, it wasn't that I was nervous to find my locker, it's that I was nervous about being late to class.
Did you have a 'clique'?
Not really. I hung around at lunch with Brad and his other friends, who were all CAD/engineering/computer types who wanted to work for GM when they got out of college.
Did you have "The Max" like Zach, Kelly, and Slater?
I never watched "Saved By The Bell", so I have no idea what this is talking about.
Admit it, were you popular?
No, not really.
Who did you want to be just like?
I can't remember, actually. I spent a lot of time in my own head during my high school years, and so I wasn't very observant of others.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
My dad, and all my friends' dads, worked in offices. I figured I'd do the same when I was older. Beyond that, I had no clue. I've never really been passionate about something to do with my life, aside from having fun.
Where did you think you'd be at the age you are now?
I don't know... probably locked into a career, married, with my own house. I didn't think much about it.
