I celebrate myself,
And what I assume you shall assume,
For every atom belonging to me as good belongs to you.
--Walt Whitman, Leaves Of Grass, originally published July 4, 1855.
This is my patriotism--not a patriotism of flags and parades and anthems and bombast, but a patriotism of books, of writers, of ideas. And as I celebrate their writings, their lives, their ideas, so too do I celebrate the nation from whence they came.
This is what I celebrate on Independence Day.
